Kanda Batata Pohay/Pohe

Pohay, the marathi way!

Pohay or pohe is a dish prepared in Marathi household from flattened rice usually for breakfast or as a snack accompanied by a warm cup of tea. This is the most likely dish served when families of the boy and girl meet during arranged marriages. Infact this dish is so common during such meet that sometimes the program itself is referred colloquially as "Kanda - pohyacha karyekram". Batata pohe is another variation of this traditional dish where boiled potatoes are added to the preparation. Kanda batata pohay is nothing but using onions and potatoes to make this tasty comforting snack.

Ingredients

1 and 1/2 cup thick poha
1 cup peeled and thinly sliced potato pieces
3/4 cup finely chopped onions
1 tsp mustard seeds
1/2 tsp cumin seeds
Handful of roasted peanuts
1 green chili [you may adjust this no]
Few curry leaves
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1/2 tsp asafoetida
salt to taste
sugar to taste
2 tbsp oil
1-2 tbsp finely chopped coriander leaves

Method:

First clean and take poha in a colander. Wash it under running water. Drain and keep it aside for 10-5 mins.

Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and as they splutter add cumin seeds. When the seeds crackle add roasted peanuts, finely cut green chili and curry leaves. Saute for half min. Add finely chopped onions and saute them till they change their color. Now add thinly sliced potato pieces, turmeric powder and asafoetida. Mix everything nicely and cover the pan to allow the potatoes to cook well. Once potatoes are cooked till soft add poha, salt, sugar and stir it well. Cover the pan again and allow it to cook on low flame for another 2-4 mins. Switch off the flame and squeeze lemon juice. Garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves and serve while hot accompanied with a cup of tea!

Note:
~Don't rinse/oversoak poha or else they turn mushy and stick to each other while cooking.
~Rinse and drain them just 10-15 mins before you start cooking.
~You can add vegetables like carrots, handful of green peas, capsicum, etc

Happy Cooking !
